Called to Serve — Reflections from the LCMC Texas Gathering
The LCMC Texas Gathering this year centered on a theme that reaches straight into the heart of Christian life: “Called.” It reminded us that God’s call is not limited to pastors, missionaries, or church leaders. It is spoken to every believer, in every season, and in every place God has planted us. We are called to listen, called to love, and called to serve.

Throughout Scripture, God called ordinary people to extraordinary purposes. Moses was called from a burning bush, unsure and hesitant, yet God used him to lead a nation. Isaiah was called in a vision and responded, “Here am I; send me.” Mary was called to bear the Savior of the world, though she was young and afraid. The disciples were called from fishing boats and tax tables to follow Jesus into a life they never expected.
None of them felt fully prepared. None of them had all the answers. But they stepped forward in faith.

Their stories challenge us today: If God called you in the same way, would you have the faith to respond? Would you trust Him enough to step into something unfamiliar, uncomfortable, or bigger than you imagined? The truth is, God still calls His people — not always through burning bushes or angels, but through opportunities, needs, and the quiet nudging of the Holy Spirit.

This year’s gathering reminded us that calling is not about perfection. It’s about availability. God works through ordinary people who make themselves willing — people who show up, reach out, and offer what they have. When we take even small steps of faith, God multiplies the impact.
Being “called” means paying attention to the people around us. It means noticing the neighbor who needs a hand, the friend who needs encouragement, the family who could use a meal, or the person sitting alone on Sunday who might just need someone to say hello. Reaching out doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes it’s as simple as a prayer, a conversation, or an offer to help.

As a congregation, we have countless opportunities to live out this calling. We can serve through our ministries, volunteer in our community, support those facing hardship, and be present for one another. When we reach out, we reflect Christ’s love in real and tangible ways — and that is the heart of our calling.
As we move forward, let’s continue asking: Where is God calling me today, and who is He calling me to reach? May we be a church that listens, responds, and serves boldly, trusting that God equips us just as He equipped those who came before us.

Devotional or Leader Tracks Available

Leader Track:

Free to Live: Embodied Leadership
What does it mean to lead faithfully in the body God has given you? In this track, Christian Huntley leads leaders through physical formation as an essential part of discipleship, tracing the incarnation, the grace found in our limits, faithful stewardship of the body, and the invitation into abundant life. Rather than another call to optimize yourself, this is an invitation to receive the life God has given and lead from wholeness rather than performance.

Leaders will wrestle honestly with how sleep, stress, aging, and the demands of ministry affect their capacity to lead, and will be challenged to root their identity in something deeper than what they do or how they look. The goal is for each leader to leave with a renewed freedom to steward their body well, and to lead with fuller presence and less striving.
Christian Huntley, LCMC | Leader Track Leader
Christian Huntley joins us from the beautiful St. Croix River Valley of Minnesota, where he serves as the Associate Service Coordinator for LCMC. He is husband to Jenna and father to Vera and Georgiana. When he’s not working or building LEGOs with his girls, Christian enjoys being outside, preferably hunting, golfing, or gathered around a bonfire. If it means being with people, he’ll try just about anything. Wherever you find him, he likely has a brewed beverage in hand (coffee, tea, or beer) and is eager to hear someone’s story. Christian loves to listen and learn, so feel free to tell him about your favorite podcast!

Christian is passionate about the church being the tangible, loving expression of Jesus on earth. In college, he felt called to help other college students connect their faith to their vocation, and he has found great joy fulfilling that calling as a local pastor in ways he never imagined. He also serves as a chaplain with the local sheriff’s office, caring for deputies and county residents alike. Christian prays that his passion for community and his gifts for connecting people and thinking strategically will help LCMC churches make disciples in their communities, so that more people may see and experience their place in Christ’s kingdom.

Devotional Track:

“The Body You Were Given”

What do we do with the body God made, Christ redeemed, and will one day raise? In this four-session devotional, Jeff Mensing leads leaders through Romans 12:1, tracing the body as Given, Redeemed, Limited, and Raised, from creation and the First Article to the goodness of the body, rest as commandment rather than reward, and the resurrection hope that gives every act of physical stewardship its meaning. Each session pairs teaching with table discussion and one practice to begin right away.

For anyone tired of both body-worship and body-neglect, this track offers a third way: to receive the body as gift rather than project. Leaders will leave with a clearer theology of the body and a practice they can carry straight into their own life and ministry.

Jeffrey Mensing, Refinery Fitness | Devotional Track Leader

Jeffrey Mensing joins us from Buda, Texas, where he serves as an Evangelist in the Texas LCMS District. He is husband to his best friend, Kimberly, and father to five children. A health and fitness advocate, Jeff coaches clients one-on-one in personal training, performance nutrition, and health. He holds credentials as an ISSA and NCCPT Certified Personal Trainer, Nutritionist, and Strength and Conditioning Specialist. Jeff believes the body is a gift, not a project, and that coaching is a relationship, not a checklist.

Jeff is a lifelong Lutheran whose calling points toward pastoral ministry. Alongside Kimberly, he leads ACTS Church Hays as an elder, providing pastoral care from their home. His formation model is grounded in Luke 2:52 and shapes both his discipleship and his fitness coaching. Jeff is dedicated to helping others steward body and soul together, trusting that true stewardship begins with what God has accomplished for us in Christ.
