2026 Annual Gathering

July 24-25

St. Paul Lutheran

New Braunfels, Texas

We come together for great food and fellowship with brothers and sisters in Christ to learn about ministry opportunities, receive powerful teaching, and worship the Most Awesome God!

You are CALLED. I am CALLED. We all are CALLED. If you call on Jesus Christ as your Lord and savior, then Jesus is calling you, too! As Lutheran Christians, it is important to ask, “What does this mean?” The fact that we are CALLED as followers of Jesus Christ has wide-ranging implications for each of us as individuals, and for each of our individual communities of faith. How do we understand what we are CALLED to? How do we help others discover how they are CALLED and encourage their pursuit of it? Join us as we unpack our theme CALLED based on 2 Timothy 1:9, “He has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began.”

Keynote Speakers

Ben Griffin, LINC – Dallas, Texas

Ben Griffin is a strategic facilitator and experienced pastor. He serves as the CEO of LINC, a national nonprofit that helps people turn their ideas into ventures that solve real world problems in the name of Jesus.

Ben has been active in the church planting community as a planter and mentor for over 20 years. He also serves as a teaching pastor at multiple churches. In his personal life, Ben and his wife are empty nesters with three young adult children. He produces ministry related visuals and watches too many superhero movies.

In his keynote, “Called with Jesus,” Ben invites participants to reimagine calling—not as something that begins with what we do, but with Who walks with us. Drawing from Prakaleo, John 6, and Exodus 13–14, he will highlight how God works through our limited means to accomplish far more than we could ask or imagine. This message centers on three grounding truths: we may not know where we are going, but we know Whom we are following; God never gives us more than He can handle; and while God does not promise the journey will be easy, He does promise His presence every step of the way. Participants will leave grounded, encouraged, and re-centered on Jesus as the source, sustainer, and ultimate goal of their calling.

Nathan Hoff, Trinity Lutheran – San Pedro, California

Nathan Hoff is the Senior Pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in San Pedro, California where he leads a vibrant community of faith and cultivated a culture of leadership development. Nathan was actually born in San Pedro while his dad served there at Ft. MacArthur. He attended high school and college in Seattle, Washington before moving to eastern Iowa, the panhandle of Texas, southern Minnesota, and Minneapolis-St. Paul where he graduated from Luther Seminary in 2002. Since seminary, Nathan spent time in Portland, Oregon, Stavanger, Norway, and Orange County, California before God brought him back home to San Pedro to serve Trinity Lutheran Church where he has remained since 2005. He is married to his wife, Joy. Together they have four adult children: Christian (married to Molly), Annika, Samuel, and Peter.

In his keynote address, “Everyday Call” Nathan will dive into and explore Romans 6. Nordis Christenson said, “The Christian life would be easy, if it wasn’t so daily.” The Small Catechism activates Romans 6 as the daily call of Jesus to every baptized person: “drowned through daily repentance, that day after day a new self should arise.” A lifetime of following Jesus’ call consists of everyday hearing, everyday dying, and everyday rising. Luther’s “Letter to his Barber on Prayer” and examples from his church community will help make this session concrete and applicable by inviting the listener to a way of: Everyday hearing the call, and everyday responding to the call with repentance and belief.

Julie Smith, LCMC – St. Peter, Minnesota

Julie Smith is the Service Coordinator of LCMC. After participating in LCMC’s constituting convention, she went on to serve as a pastor in LCMC congregations, investing deeply in the work of her district, helping start and lead a seminary, and serving on the LCMC Board of Trustees. She later joined the LCMC staff as Coordinator for Districts and Fellowships and has worked closely with the Augustana and Epiphany Districts of LCMC.

A lifelong Lutheran, Julie was ordained in 1998 and has served congregations in Clarkfield, Bock, and Springfield, Minnesota. She also spent several years as a Bible camp director and is a co‑founder of St. Paul Lutheran Seminary. A graduate of Luther Seminary, Julie loves any opportunity to teach from leading silly Bible skits with first graders to helping seminary students sharpen their preaching.

Julie is an avid sports fan: high school football tops the list, with NBA games featuring any former Minnesota Timberwolves close behind. Like all Minnesotans, she believes summer should be spent at the lake with the Twins on the radio, and prefers not to be asked about the Vikings.

In her keynote, “Called for Faith,” Julie will discuss how before any other calling upon our lives makes any kind of sense, we are first called to faith. And as we carry out the various callings upon our lives, we are only sustained by a life of faith. Apart from faith in the promises of Christ Jesus, our callings are nothing but chores. Join us as we look at the calls of Jonah and Paul as snapshots of how faith and call work (or do not work) together.

Preachers

David Eibel – Living Word, Grapevine, Texas

Pastor David Eibel is a graduate of Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. He is the Senior Pastor of Living Word Lutheran Church in Grapevine where he has served for the past 26 years.

He previously served Hope Lutheran Church in Cedar Hill, Texas, and Richland Lutheran Church in Washington State. He and his wife, Denise, have three adult children and four (soon to be five) grandchildren. Pastor Eibel is passionate about preaching, teaching, and discipleship formation in the church.

Jeremy Pedersen – Faith, Seguin, Texas

Pastor Jeremy Pedersen has been blessed to serve as Pastor of Faith Lutheran Church in Seguin since August 2025, joyfully answering God’s call in this congregation. His faith journey began at Elk Horn Lutheran Church in rural southwest Iowa, where he was baptized, confirmed, and later ordained. Jeremy earned a Bachelor of Arts from Wartburg College and spent a formative year serving at a Christian outdoor ministry center in the West Midlands of England before completing his Master of Divinity at Luther Seminary.

Ordained in 2011, Pastor Jeremy’s first and continuing call is as a chaplain in the Minnesota National Guard, through which he has deployed to Kuwait three times. Between deployments, he served congregations near Alexandria, Minnesota, from 2012 to 2024. In 2024, Jeremy and his family followed God’s leading south to Texas. He is married to Amy, a schoolteacher in Seguin, and they share life with Sammi, their very spoiled shepherd–husky mix.

Pre-Gathering Seminar

Interested in diving deeper into topics related to our theme? Join us for the Pre-Gathering Seminar on Friday afternoon from Noon to 4:30 p.m. In this optional educational seminar, our keynote presenters will engage participants in a more thorough look into our theme as we wrestle with specific topics that will help us to more effectively lead ministry in our congregations. Lunch will be served at Noon with the seminar beginning at 1 p.m.

This enriching Pre‑Gathering Seminar features all three keynote speakers and is an ideal opportunity to go deeper before the event officially kicks off. Julie Smith opens with Called to Go, exploring what it means to respond to God’s call to share the Gospel beyond what is comfortable and familiar, drawing from the lives of Abraham, Moses, Jonah, Peter, and Paul to challenge and inspire church leaders to step out in faith. Nathan Hoff follows with Fan into Flame: Kindling for Your Calling from 2 Timothy, helping pastors and ministry leaders identify the hidden forces of fear and shame that quietly suffocate calling, and discover how the Spirit’s breath, the right fuel, and God’s protection keep that flame burning strong. Ben Griffin concludes with a dynamic, practical framework for discerning and living out your unique calling, whether leading a congregation, planting a church, or navigating a pivotal ministry season using guided reflection, real‑world tools, and live Q&A so you leave with clarity, next steps, and a shared language for pursuing God’s mission.

All are welcome and encouraged to attend the Pre-Gathering Seminar. Please make sure you add the “Pre-Gathering Seminar” option onto your ticket when you register. Regular cost for the Pre-Gathering is $25. SPECIAL PRICING FOR PASTORS AND MINISTRY STAFF: $10! Lunch is included!

I Believe I Cannot

Julie Smith
LCMC
St. Peter, MN

Luther’s explanation to the third article of the Creed is one of the most beloved statements of faith in our tradition. But all too often we stop after the first phrase. In this breakout we will explore how the Spirit doesn’t stop with calling and gathering us in but also sends us out into the world with all sorts of callings that our neighbors need us to carry out.
Offered Sessions 1 & 2.

The Thrill of Orthodoxy (2.0)

Luke Allison
Bulverde, TX

The great need of our time is for a Church that maintains spiritual sanity even if the current state of the world makes it look weird. In a time of confusion about truth, identity, and authority, the Church must develop a stronger doctrinal backbone. This breakout will explore how historic, basic Christianity provides clarity, stability, and confidence for leaders and congregations alike. The faith “once for all delivered to the saints” isn’t a relic to defend, but a life-giving framework that can be both thrilling and freeing in our restless, spiritually anemic age.
Offered Sessions 1 & 2.

Called to be Sent:
Mobilizing the Church

Jesse Schrowang
Commerce, TX

In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus gives believers a call to go and make disciples of all nations. It was not a call for some but for all. From Genesis to Revelation, God shows His heart for the Nations. So how can your local church become both a going church and a sending church? What does this look like? How can your church expand past their Jerusalem to Judea, Samaria, and the end of the earth (Acts 1:8). In this session we will look at what it looks like to be a sending church.
Offered Sessions 1 & 2.

Partnership: Reaching the Nations

William Moberly
Tampa, FL

More than three decades ago, Rev. Dr. Carl Braaten warned that if the church does not proclaim the gospel, the message of salvation will not be heard. That challenge is even more urgent today. Join ALWM Director Bill Moberly as he explores why shifting from benevolence to partnership is the biblical and fruitful way to fulfill Christ’s call to “make disciples of all nations.” You will hear amazing stories about mission work among the least-reached in nine countries across three continents, where hundreds of Buddhists, Hindus, and Muslims are coming to Christ each year.
Offered Sessions 1 & 2.

I Have Heard You Calling

Nathan Hoff
San Pedro, CA

We live in a wordy era, but also an age when the word of God is rare. How do we recognize the Voice that is “calling in the night”? As Christians, it is tempting to live between despairing disappointment and a pining for the return of the good old days. How do we perceive God’s call now? Samuel (Shema-El) means “to hear” and “God,” Three episodes from Samuel’s life give some insight into how everyday calling is shaped, and over time, clarified.
Offered Sessions 1 & 3.

5 Mistakes Churches Make

Eric Hulstrand
Eden Prairie, MN

In working with congregations in conflict and transition for the last 9 years, consultant Eric Hulstrand has seen many common actions taken by churches that have led to trouble. At the time, these actions seem like the right thing to do. Over time, however, they can sow the seeds of conflict and dissension. Come find out what those top 5 mistakes congregations make that can eventually cause headaches.
Offered Sessions 1 & 3.

Living a Holy Life

Greg Finke
St. Paul, MN

In 2 Timothy 1:9, St. Paul isn’t waxing eloquent about theological concepts. He is giving us the good news that we have been saved by Jesus, which now changes how we live our daily lives. We now have a “holy calling” on our lives. In this breakout, Rev. Greg Finke, author of “Joining Jesus on His Mission,” clarifies and simplifies what it looks like to live out this “holy calling” in daily life. If someone was watching us live such a life, what would they see? A theologian, keeper of morality, or something more fun?
Offered Sessions 1 & 3.

Called to be Sent

Leslie Urie
Minneapolis, MN

We invite the church to rediscover a simple truth: mission begins in prayer. This session recenters us to listen to God. Before we plan, mobilize or send, we first pray—not merely asking God to bless, but asking, “Lord, what are You doing? Where are You calling us?” We will explore a biblical rhythm that has shaped the Church throughout history: Prayer > Discernment > Sending > Engagement.
Offered Sessions 1 & 3.

Leadership Track

About the Speaker
Christian Huntley, Associate Service Coordinator, Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ (LCMC)
We all want to be used by God, for his purpose, in his time. We cry, “Here I am, Lord!” Yet we wrestle. We’re impatient. We’re unsure of where God is calling and if God is calling. We aren’t sure we have what it takes. That’s the beauty of God. God’s desire is to use you, and your willingness, for his mission in your neighborhood and around the world. Join us as we explore a deeper sense of vocation and mission and get ready to go where he sends us.
Christian Huntley has served LCMC as Coordinator for Leadership and Pastoral Ministry since 2023. He previously had served as a pastor at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Afton, MN. An Iowa native, he received his MDiv from Bethel University. The beautiful St. Croix River Valley in Minnesota is home for Christian, his wife, Jenna, and their two daughters. When not working or building LEGOs with his girls, Christian enjoys being outside, preferably hunting, golfing, or around a bonfire. If he can be with people, he will try about anything. He loves to listen and learn!
Christian is passionate about the church being the tangible, loving expression of Jesus on earth. He felt a calling in college to help other college students connect their faith to their vocation and has found great joy fulfilling that calling as a local pastor in ways he never imagined! He also serves as a Chaplain with the local Sheriff’s office, caring for deputies and county residents alike.

Devotional Track

About the Speaker
Meloni Puishes, Pastoral Intern, St. John, Dime Box
“Here I Am, Lord — Climbing the Right Mountain” is a  devotional series that explores what it means to answer God’s call in everyday life. Drawing inspiration from Jim Hayhurst’s The Right Mountain and Scripture, each lesson invites us to discern the “right mountain” — the vocation God has chosen for us — and to climb it with faith, humility, and community. Through themes of surrender, weakness, and shared purpose, this series reminds us that true success is not measured by titles or trophies, but by faithfulness and worship in our work, home, and ministry.

Meloni invites you to read the book The Right Mountain: Lessons from Everest by Jim Hayhurst Sr. in alignment with her Devotional Track
Meloni L. Puishes is an educator, preacher, and relational disciple-maker who helps people recognize God’s presence and calling in the everyday places of life. With a background in public-school leadership and active service in Lutheran congregational ministry, she brings a warm, conversational style to preaching, teaching, and pastoral care. Meloni’s devotional work weaves Scripture with story and real-life experience, inviting people to hear God’s “Here I am” grace so they can respond with their own “Here I am, Lord” in every vocation—at home, at work, in community, and in the church. She serves in the Lincoln–Dime Box area of Texas through revitalization, care ministry development, and relational discipleship. At this year’s LCMC Texas Winter Retreat, she will lead the devotional track on living faithfully and attentively to God’s call in all walks of life.
